Do I need any prior experience in Argentine tango or dance in general?
The Argentine Tango Club at UCSD welcomes people with all levels of skill and experience, from the absolute beginner to the seasoned dancer. You absolutely do not need to have any prior experience in order to join us in experiencing the beauty that is Argentine tango.
Do I need to have a partner?
While you are free to bring a partner (and friends or even your entire floor/suite!), a partner is not required.
What kind of clothes should I wear to the practica?
Comfortable and casual clothes work fine. Most people show up in jeans.
What kind of shoes should I bring?
In general, a slippery sole (leather or suede) works best so you can slide and pivot easily on the floor. For men and female leaders, close-toed shoes. For female followers, a heeled shoe or shoe that is generally secure on the foot. But if you don’t have any shoes readily available, socks work too!
“I’m a woman but I want to learn how to lead” or “I’m a man but I want to learn how to follow.” Are men always leaders and women always followers?
Leaders and followers are dance roles rather than gender roles. In fact, learning how to dance both roles, regardless of your gender, is a great way to improve your tango skills.
Since you will be interacting in close proximity with others, it is courteous to manage or prevent strong odors before coming to practica.
